“Dream. Plan. Achieve.” Career Fair at British International School Istanbul

The “Dream. Plan. Achieve.” Career Fair, organised through the collaboration of The British International School Istanbul (BISI) and BIS Zekeriyaköy, was successfully delivered under the distinguished coordination of our PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

This meaningful event reflects the strength of the BISI community, bringing together highly accomplished professionals—many of whom are part of our parent body—from internationally recognised organisations such as HSBC, Ford, Ericsson, and the United Nations.

By sharing their knowledge and career journeys in fields including finance, engineering, and international diplomacy, our guest speakers provided students with valuable real-world insights. These interactions offered students a unique opportunity to explore future career paths while strengthening the connection between academic learning and professional life.

The event once again demonstrated British International School Istanbul’s commitment to student development, equipping learners with the awareness and inspiration needed to plan their future with confidence.

The Ultimate Choice for Global Families: Why BISI Remains the Leading International School in Istanbul

Choosing the right school is the most critical decision for any family relocating to Turkey. For nearly four decades, the British International School Istanbul (BISI) has been the definitive choice for the international community, offering an education that transcends borders.

1. The Triple Accreditation Powerhouse: CIS, COBIS, and MSA

BISI stands as a beacon of academic excellence, being the first and only school in Türkiye to hold a triple accreditation that covers every global requirement:

  • CIS (Council of International Schools): Ensuring the highest international standards in protection, leadership, and curriculum.
  • COBIS (Council of British International Schools): The hallmark of a premier British education outside the UK.
  • MSA (Middle States Association): A prestigious American accreditation that validates our high school transcripts for top-tier universities in the United States and worldwide.

This "Triple Crown" ensures that whether your next move is to London, New York, or Singapore, your child’s education remains seamless and globally recognized.

2. A Purely International Community

BISI is a true international school. In compliance with Turkish regulations, we exclusively serve the international community. This creates a unique, diverse environment where over 50 nationalities coexist. For an expat child, this means an immediate sense of belonging among peers who share the same global lifestyle and transition challenges.

3. 39 Years of Excellence in Education

Established in 1987, BISI is not just a school; it is a legacy. For 39 years, we have been the first choice for diplomatic missions, multinational CEOs, and high-net-worth expat families. Our experience in managing the "transition" phase of moving to a new country is unmatched in Istanbul.

4. The Zekeriyaköy Advantage: Space, Safety, and Serenity

Located in the prestigious Sarıyer / Zekeriyaköy district, our campus offers what central Istanbul often lacks: Space.

  • Spacious & Green: Surrounded by the Belgrade Forest, our students breathe fresh air in a secure, tranquil environment.
  • World-Class Sports Facilities: From heated indoor pools to professional-grade football pitches and tennis courts, we prioritize physical well-being.
  • Safe Haven: A gated, highly secure campus designed to give parents peace of mind while their children explore and learn.

5. Academic Pathways: From EYFS to the IB Diploma

We offer a seamless educational journey through the National Curriculum of England (modified for international students) and the IB Diploma Programme. This ensures that our graduates are prepared for top-tier universities worldwide, from the Ivy League to Oxbridge.

This year, over 16,000 students from around the world will compete. There are three stages: regional, global, and the Tournament of Champions at Yale. Students are evaluated based on their debating skills, subject knowledge, writing abilities, and teamwork. We are immensely proud of our teams' achievements and hope they continue to spread The BIS's great name to scholars at Yale and beyond.

TEDx Event @BISI

Our Goal, What We Did and the Purpose of the Event

Our overarching goal for the event 'TEDxYouth@BISI' was to provide a talented group of students with the opportunity to speak about topics that they are passionate about. Giving students a platform to deliver a talk is not only empowering for the individual, but is also inspiring for the audience.

Over the course of around 8 months, we have been planning, drafting, writing, editing, rehearsing and planning our talks. Our talks covered a range of diverse ideas, discussing topics such as the destruction of the Universe, gender inequality in football and video game addiction; these diverse talks were selected to ensure that our audience were exposed to as wide a range of thought provoking ideas as possible.

The Talks

Soovin Jang: Our Host for the Event

Soovin is a remarkably talented and hardworking student whose relentless pursuit of excellence made the event possible. She was our host for the event, acquainting our audience with TEDx as an organisation, introducing our speakers and encouraging our audience to reflect on how the talks may have resonated with them.

Sorina Lloyd: Gender Inequality in Football.

Sorina focused on the unfair imbalances found in professional football between the men and women's game, revealing some significant information relating to pay, media coverage and opportunities in schools for girls to play football.

Harry Yoon: Video Game Addiction

Harry's talk revealed the ease with which young people can become addicted to video games and the detrimental impacts that it can have in relation to academics, social skills and mental & physical wellbeing.

Aabya Yasir: Animal Testing

Aabya focused on the controversial nature of animal testing and how she hopes that it is a practice which could eventually be replaced thanks to developments in science and technology.

Cennet Eken: Developmental Psychology

Cennet exposed the potential impacts of childhood experiences on adult life, explaining how neglect and abuse, as well as overprotective parenting, can contribute and shape a person's mindset and tendencies.

Lucas Groenfeldt: Communication

Lucas's talk explored the complex and multifaceted nature of communication and how it is one of the most powerful tools that humans have at their disposal whether we know it or not.

Alyssa Fortune: Memory

Alyssa discussed the topic of memory, focusing specifically on: 'perfect memory' and the different ways in which this can be manifested; false memory, and the ways in which false memories can be implanted onto our minds; and memory loss and its causes.

Azka Qureshi: Sexual Violence Against Women

Azka's talk explored the injustice that many women in society face due to sexual harrassment and assault, as well as the harmful stereotypes towards men and women that are engrained into society.

James Chen: The End of the Universe

James discussed three possible theories for how our universe will end: the Big Freeze, the Big Rip and the Big Crunch, all of which present inevitable doomsdays for humankind.

Mouna Mahrousa: Procrastination and Social Media

Mouna's talk uncovered some uncomfortable truths surrounding the impact of social media on our levels of procrastination, while also providing some possible solutions to the problem.

Conclusion

Overall, the event was a success for a number of reasons. Firstly, the speakers developed a strong sense of maturity and confidence by taking part in the event, while also learning about the importance of hardwork, organisation and planning. Secondly, the event will hopefully have inspired others to change the way that they think about certain aspects of society and the world around them. Finally, and most importantly of all, the entire journey from planning to hosting the event 'TEDxYouth@BISI' has been thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding for all of us involved, creating memories which will be cherished forever.

Iceland Expedition

From Captain's Journal

Students across years eight to thirteen were invited to participate in an extra-curricular trip to Iceland during February half-term break. Thirty-nine students were accompanied by teachers Ms Habib, Ms Scotland, Ms Gumus, Mr Gunnell and Mr Muller.

We started off an early journey leaving Istanbul at eight am on Friday. There was a very long layover before we could check our luggage in so we camped outside a coffee shop with free wi-fi and an area where the students and teachers could relax. Over the seven hours there were lots of card games and even hide and seek! We landed in Iceland just before three am Turkey time and the border control was very surprised to see so many nationalities in one school trip visiting Iceland. We made our hour journey to the hotel in the centre of Reykjavik before getting up at 8am for breakfast. Students were very happy with the abundance of croissants and cakes available for breakfast. We met our teacher guide, Roger, at breakfast and we listened as he told us about being the Iceland expert; Roger has visited Iceland for the last twenty-five years and has seen many changes to this tectonic island. We also learnt our first Icelandic word, ‘Góðan daginn’ which means ‘good day’ and we were able to say this to our Icelandic coach driver Emil each day.

Our first full day in Iceland was windy, cold and exciting! We travelled between two continents, this time tectonic plates and not the Bosphorus which we are more accustomed to back in Istanbul. Students were able to cross the bridge and for some, look at their first lava ash from a recent eruption in the area. After this we then walked among pahoehoe and a’a lavas that formed eight hundred years ago in eruptions known as the “Reykjanes Fires”. Our journey then carried on past amongst mud pools and steam vents and viewed the vigorously bubbling Gunnuhver, Iceland’s largest mud pool with a diameter of twenty metres. These form where steam generated from a geothermal reservoir emanates and condenses, mixing with surface water. Our last stop of the day was probably our highlight of the day, the volcanic ridge of Fagradalsfjall, which means ‘beautiful valley’s mountain’.Eruptions took place here from March to September 2021 and again in summer 2022. It was an incredible experience to see the steam still being generated from the black lava in the snow. Students decided to have extra fun rolling down the snow covered volcano valley, making snow angels and free-falling holding hands. We then checked into our hotel which was in the middle of the Icelandic countryside. Our rooms were luxurious for a school trip and there were lots of comfy areas for the students to sit and watch movies and play games after their exciting first day.

After waking up and eating breakfast students had to make their own lunch - luckily no-one forgot! We made our way to the not so ‘secret lagoon’. It was below freezing outside and students were thrilled to get into a thermal pool where the water remains thirty-eight-forty celsius throughout the year. After this we then were fortunate to eat tomatoes grown in Iceland greenhouses. Students were able to explore the vertical farming methods and try fresh tomato juice. Some students bought the home made pasta sauce so please do check their bags as you may have a surprise waiting for you! Our last stop of the day (due to bad weather) was the Geysir. We waited just a few minutes before Strokkur erupted thirty metres into the air. When we returned back to the hotel we had some rest time before dinner and a forced game of bingo…which the students secretly loved! Two students in the group waited for the Northern Lights to make an appearance - their efforts paid off and they saw a slight green glow in the clouds.

The weather had cleared up for day three in Iceland and we were very excited as we checked out of our hotel as we had an incredible experience waiting for us - a glacier walk! Our first stop was the Lava Centre where we learnt all about the recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland and we got to try different flavoured salts from Iceland. Second stop was the Katla geopark so that some Year 12 students could complete their fieldwork collection for their Geography Internal Assessment. Others explored the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and some made their way to the snack bar and souvenir shop. Unfortunately we could not walk behind the waterfall due to the ice but it didn’t stop our photo opportunities for the Instagram and Snapchat feeds. Finally we reached the Solheimajokull glacier tongue. We listened to our safety advice and put on our equipment to be able to hike up the glacier. As a group we found the experience exhilarating - we watched each other eat the glacier ice, jump over crevasses and do press ups over the meltwater; definitely an experience we will never forget! Our final stop of the day was Reynisfjara, a beach made up of black volcanic sand and basalt pillar cliffs. The waves reached over twenty metres at some point so we made sure we stayed a safe distance and even had time to take a stop in a cafe for a quick cup of tea and a well deserved soft drink. We made our way to the next hotel where we had a fantastic evening meal of, ‘the best mushroom soup the teachers had ever tasted’, and a really filling lasagne which meant that none of us even wanted the dessert!

Our final day in Iceland was filled with lots of fun. We travelled to a geothermal greenhouse where we met Tammy, our guide. We were able to put eggs into geothermal water to cook, which we ate at the end of our tour alongside homemade bread that had been cooking for over twenty four hours. It was a delicious snack after breakfast. IGCSE Geography students in year eleven were then able to see one of their geography case studies in action, Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Station. We were able to see how the power station worked and how much electricity was provided for the capital city due to tectonic activity. A two hour journey to the capital followed where the students were finally able to spend some of their money on souvenirs and the teachers rewarded themselves with a hot chocolate and shared some ‘Bolludagur’ - buns that are given on Lent. It is said that traditionally you are not meant to buy your own buns and instead you earn them by spanking people with a wooden stick with colourful paper decorations on the end - we would like to report that no students or teachers were harmed for a bun! We checked into our final hotel before walking the forty-five minutes back into town to eat at the Hard Rock cafe where the students said it was the best meal of the week! We tried to have an early night as we had to get up at three am for our coach journey back to the airport. Overall we had an amazing time and it was definitely one we will not forget.

In "BIS 4ver" a cast of approximately 75 students, from across Primary and Secondary, recreated the British International School, along with its teachers.

The original play tracked the lives of a group of fictitious IB students as they tried to cope with school, home, friendship, love and life. The piece also portrayed students from other year groups as they wrestled with their own problems. Inspired by the Coming of Age genre and specifically films like ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’, ‘Rushmore’, and the ‘400 Blows’, the play mixed comedy with the harsh realities of life, and death.

Primary students deftly provided a glimpse into the past when they reenacted a play that two of the lead characters had themselves performed in when they were younger. The play within a play was Romeo and Juliet and the Primary students handled the difficult language with great skill.

Y4 Exploring the Bosphorus

Year 4 International classes have enjoyed trips to Bosphorus.

Year 4 International classes have enjoyed their first humanities trips to districts along the Bosphorus. Over two days we visited Besiktas, Bebek and Sariyer on the European side, as well as the fishing village of Anadolu Kavagi on the Asian side. They made geographical observations of these areas in order to discuss the similarities and differences between them.

They also were able to use a variety of maps to locate the areas and identify the human and physical features in those districts. Highlights of the trip included having a picnic, playing on the Bebek playground, taking a ferry, walking up to the Yolos castle to view the third bridge and buying an ice cream! We look forward to more educational trips this year.

with Year 1 students

This month, Toucan Class and Flamingo Class went on their very first school trip. We visited the Ataturk Arboretum, where we had the opportunity to see a variety of different trees and plants. The children were particularly excited to hear where the different trees were from and discover the trees that were from the same places as themselves. We also saw wildflowers, acorns, mushrooms, conkers, pine cones, swans, bunnies and beetles. The children also observed signs of Autumn and collected leaves to use in their school activities.

KS1 & KS2 Choir Performance

First time that many of the children had been on the stage!

On Thursday 27th October, the KS1 and KS2 choirs enjoyed performing for their peers in years 1-6 and teachers in the theatre. This was the first time that the two choirs had collaborated together, as well as the first time that many of the children had been on the stage.

The children performed enthusiastically after only 6 rehearsals during our after school club on Mondays, and received a rousing applause from the audience.

There are numerous reported benefits from singing including: psychological, physical, social, musical and educational. Singing helps children’s memory retention, improves reading skills as well as their enjoyment of the curriculum. Research has shown that singing lights up more areas of the brain than any other activity. Whilst singing, children’s self-esteem is boosted and they feel socially included. They understand the importance of teamwork, it improves their communication skills, language acquisition and enables them to develop new friendships. Events like stage performances are able to bring the school community together like no other activity.

We are excited to continue our weekly rehearsals after school and during lunchtimes, in preparation for a very special winter performance in December, for students, teachers and parents. Our choir is expanding rapidly in popularity - the KS2 choir has now grown to 38 members and the KS1 choir to 20 members!
